What to Do in Porto in the Summer (Besides the Beach)

It’s no secret that summer in Porto is warm, lively, and absolutely beautiful. And while the city’s coastal charm and nearby beaches are undeniable draws (and certainly worth a visit), if you’re staying in a flat in Porto this summer and want to explore beyond the coastline, there’s a wealth of vibrant activities to enjoy.
Here’s your guide to making the most of Porto’s summer, exploring all the city has to offer beyond its sandy shores:
1. Enjoy Outdoor Events and Live Music
Summer is festival season in Porto! You’ll find everything from jazz in the park to open-air film screenings.
Look out for:
- Porto Sunday Sessions at Jardins do Palácio de Cristal – live music and relaxing vibes.
- Festa de São João (June 23rd) – If you’re here in late June, this is the event of the year, with fireworks, music, food, and quirky traditions.
- Festival da Comida Continente – A huge, family-friendly event held at Parque da Cidade, usually in July. It features free concerts from big national and international artists, delicious food from all over Portugal, live cooking shows, and a vibrant, fun-filled atmosphere.
2. Visit the Port Wine Cellars in Gaia
Just across the river, the Port wine cellars are a cool (literally and figuratively) place to spend a summer afternoon.
- Take a guided tour, learn about the wine-making process, and enjoy a tasting session in a temperature-controlled cellar.
- Some cellars also have rooftops with river views: perfect for a post-tour glass of chilled white port.
3. Take a Shaded Walk Through the Gardens and Parks
When it’s hot in the city, head to Porto’s green spaces for a break from the heat.
- Jardins do Palácio de Cristal – Panoramic views, peacocks, shaded paths, and often live music or events.
- Parque da Cidade – The largest park in Porto, with lakes, forest areas, and plenty of space to relax.
- Jardim de São Lázaro – A charming small park with a local feel and plenty of trees.
4. Take a Douro River Cruise
While not quite a beach day, a Douro River cruise is a fantastic way to stay cool and see the city from a different angle. There are:
- 1-hour “6 Bridges” cruises leaving from Ribeira
- Sunset cruises with wine and music
- Full-day Douro Valley cruises if you’re up for a longer adventure
Check the wind and sun forecast before you go, since some afternoon cruises can be breezy and refreshing!

5. Catch an Open-Air Show or Performance
Check out what’s happening at:
- Casa da Música – They often host free or low-cost summer concerts outside.
- Teatro Municipal do Porto – Offers seasonal programming, sometimes even outdoors or in public squares.
- Local markets and fairs – Many pop-up festivals and street performers appear throughout the summer, especially near Ribeira or Rua das Flores.
- Experience a Fado Show – Immerse yourself in Portugal’s most soulful tradition: Fado music. Several venues in Porto offer intimate Fado nights, often paired with a traditional Portuguese dinner. It’s an emotional and unforgettable way to spend a summer evening.
Porto has beaches, but you don’t need them to make the most of summer here. So grab your hat, your water bottle, and your curiosity, because whether you’re sipping port by the river, strolling through shaded gardens, or dancing under the stars, the city has something for everyone.
